mares heat

Question
We just purchased a 5 year old mare and brought her home on the 8th of May.  She was pretty much pastured by herself and not socialized very much.  After about 2 days we put her in with our gelding and in about 2 days they we good friends.  On the 15th she came in heat.  She is still in heat, squirting constantly.  I took her out of her stall this morning to groom her and spray her with fly spray and she was in the middle of squirting.  She was so wobbly the I thought she was going to fall over (when she squirts, she gets right up on her tip-toes). She stood fine while I sprayed her, but when I put her out she moved wobbly again.  Once she got out in the paddock with the gelding she started to graze and acted fine.  Do you think this 11 day cycle is because she just got here and she's never been with a gelding before or does this happen sometimes.  Could this be a normal cycle for her???  Have you ever heard of a mare like this?  When we first saw her she was in heat and she was very logy.  Forgive my 20 questions, I am just looking for some answers!!!  Thanks so much in advance.

Answer
Hi! this is normal for a mare to do. She is in the middle of her heat-called "standing heat" where she stands like you describe to be bred. the gelding is probably new to her. If he is acting like a stallion, cahsing, snorting, pawing etc.-that makes her come into heat like this also. If she is pastured with him-this squirting might lessen abit once she gets used to him. I hope this helps!! thanks for your question.Heather
