Question
Hi
My parents bought a farm in april last year and with the farm came 5horses. One which we estimate is about 1year or is just over 1year. And i need to break him in sooooon because my father is wanting to get rid of him, if i dont.
Do you know how to break a horse in?? but i need to break it in in such a way that it likes every one and not just the person training it, do you know how to do that???
The One horse that is here, a 3 year old stallion, we galded him and i trained him but now only i can ride him and touch him, no one else can!
So if you have any idea on how to break in a 1year old, so that it likes every one, (eg, a school horse) i would really appriciate it alot!
Thanks!

Answer
This yearling is not old enough to be ridden.  A horse is not mature until it is three years old.  You could begin teaching the colt voice commands, using a halter and lead rope, walk, ho (I don't say whoa)and back.  Also get an old inner tube and secure it to a post in a nice safe area.  Tie the colt to the inner tube for short periods at a time until it learns to stand tied.  Get carrots as rewards and ask the colt to pick up a foot, just for a minute to begin with.  When he gives the foot, give him the carrot.  Repeat with each foot.  If the colt doesn't like the carrot, try grating the carrots and adding them to the feed so he'll get used to the taste.    For the older horse, I would suggest that you catch the horse, have other people feed a carrot or bit of feed, scratch or gently rub the horse so he'll become used to other people.  If the horse becomes ill, it will be difficult to help him if no one can get close enough to give medications.
