Sheath Problems

Question
Hello, I have had my gelding for about three weeks and he is doing great. However,I noticed yesterday that his sheath look tight and firm as opposed to the usual loose folds. When I inquired about this on another site, they said the sheath need to be cleaned, and it was swollen becuase urine had leaked into it. I gave the sheath a proper clean with baby oil etc, and found teh 'bean'. What I am wondering though, will teh urine dissapear by itself, or do i need a vet to come?

Thank you very much,

Cassie

Answer
Hi- I would keep a close eye on it and if you dont see any changes in a few days- I would call the vet. If the "bean" is very large a vet may have to sedate your horse to clean the sheath . the urine and the black stuff "smegma"  should have flaked off when you cleaned it. The sheath needs to be cleaned about 2 times a year.Personally- (i'm not a vet), if you cleaned it well-I think you should have no problems. I  hope this helps you out a little-sorry I couldn't have been more help-Good luck!! :)
