Question
hi last night i went down to brush my horse after she had been inside all day because of bad weather. & i noticed that she had swollen udders but one was bigger than the other.. they were hard and hot but there was no pain.. clear liquid came out of them & so i went for a ride & when i had got back i checked them again & they had gone down a little bit & then they went completetly gone by the time i feed her, then this morning i went down to feed her & they were swollen again, theres no chance shes in foal, she had a foal 3-4yrs ago & the foal is 100% healthy, the only thing i have changed in her diet is ive added Dodson&Horrell Barley rings but not alot, do you have any suggestions on what it could be ??

Answer
Hi- It sounds like your mare has mastitis. A mare doesn't have to be in foal to get mastitis. It can come from an injury, dirty stall, insect bites , high estrogen, the list is endless. This is only my opinion based on experience- I would call the vet to have them look at her. If it is mastitis , it can be potentially fatal!!! Good luck with your mare- Thanks
