keeping a stud

Question
Hi I am thinking about buying a quarter horse stud. I have found one online, and have made contact with the owner. She told me that they have been able to keep him in a pen made of two strands of hot wire with unbred mares around him. I have had several people tell me that is not possible with the way studs act. What is your opinion of this? We have a one acre pasture that we keep our mare and her two year old filly in. What kind of pen do you recomend for keeping a stud? We have a runin type barn and I was thinking of building a pipe fence around it. Would that be suitable? The lady also told me he is very respectful to mares and people. I have heard all kinds of things of how a stud can be very mean like a bull. Is it possible for one not to be?

                        Thank you for your time,

Answer
I have an Arab stallion that can be next to a mare in season and not act any differently than if he were alone. We train breeders to only be interested in breeding when we place a chain in their mouths and we always breed in a specific location where the horse recognizes that is specifically for that purpose.  I recommend taking the horse on a 30 day trial basis. This stud will act totally differently in new surroundings as well. When he leaves his current mare or mares, he will be difficult at best because his job is to protect them. When hecannot see or hear or smell tham, he may go a little crazy. Trial purchases are the best.....I hope this helps. each horse is different and they have their own habits. So keep an open mind with a new stallion. Brian
