Breeding different sized horses

Question

Hi,

I have a few shetlands that I have been trying to find a shetland stud to breed to them. Im not into papers and all that stuff. Im more into bringing back ponies that are big enough for kids up to 110lbs can ride. There are soo many minis and people are riding them. Which is wrong.

I have a 46"+ shetland mare and a 40" shetland/mini mare that I would like to breed to my 13hh stud. He is a beautiful mustang. With the best personality and comfirmation ive ever seen, hes very refined almost like a welsh.(im a huge mustang finatic) My 40" mare just had a mini mule baby (her first) with no problem. My other shetland was bred to a mini but didnt foal. I was told by a friend who breeds that as long as the pony has had a baby already that you can breed em to any size horse or pony. Is this true. Would you think my mustang is to big for them? I like smaller horses and all 3 of them have wonderful personalities and my 46"+ shetland comes from incredible bloodlines. THough I never registered her. If you think both would be able to foal from him then that would be awesome. If not then ill mostlikely keep my shetland/mini colt a stud.(10months old now)

Answer
Hi - It is probably possible to breed the 46 inch shetland to the mustang, but I wouldnt breed the smaller one to him- It could be disastrous-there may still be some complications, and I would think very hard before I did it- If the mare were the mustang and the stallion the mini-It would be no problem. It is NOT true that once they have a foal, they can be bred to any size horse. The foal could be too large and both die during labor. - I myself-would consider a pony breed such as a welsh to breed her to.I wish you the best of luck in your breeding- Thanks!!
