Question
I bought a mare almost a year ago now for a schooling horse.  We had no idea she was bred until October.  The vet thinks that she might be due sometime this month but we dont really have a clue.  She last month she bagged up just a little and lost it, then this month she bagged up huge (no waxing) but then lost it again...I am so confused.  We are pretty sure she is a maiden mare has anyone see this before?

Answer
Hi Krystal,
It is not uncommon for a mare's udder to go up and down while their udder develops.  There are also mares who do not completely fill up with milk until after the foal is born.

If you have had her a year and you know that she was not bred while you have owned her, then that foal should be coming any time.

Don't let the udder issue concern you too terribly.  My guess is that once that baby is on the way, her udder will stay full.

Wishing you the best,
Sandy
