Question
Hi I was wondering if its possible for a paint/Qh to carry a mini foal out of a 28"-33" stallion if we in plant semon in her.
We just wanted to know if it is possible if the foal will live. she 11 months right now and the stalliong we will in-plant is 10 months old and will stand 33"-34" tall when fully grown so is it possible for the foal to live becuas the mare will stand 13-14 hand tall right now she stands 10-12 hands.
Or should we breed her to a bigger mini or pony.
Because we want a small to lager pony out of her.
Can you help me

Answer
Hi Rachael,

Yes, it is possible for a large breed mare to become pregnant and carry a foal by a miniature stallion. BUT... the problem you will face is that the foal will probably be too small when born to adequately nurse from its mother.  It just isn't going to be able to reach the mare's udder.

Miniature foals when born are generally only about 19-21 inches tall.

You would probably be better off to breed your mare to a Shetland or Welch pony to get the smaller pony that you want.

Your mare sounds awful small for a Paint/QH.  Does she have some pony in her?  A Paint/QH cross should actually reach a mature height of over 14hh or they are considered a pony.

Also, if your mare is only 11 months old, you really need to wait until she is at least 3 years old at the earliest before considering breeding her.  A horse isn't considered fully mature and done growing until 4-5 years old, depending on the breed.  Breeding them too young can really take a lot out of them and affect how they mature.

So, you have plenty of time to find yourself a nice little pony stud to breed your mare to.  But it isn't worth the risk to breed your big mare to a miniature stallion.
