Question
Hi Lisa- We bred our stallion to a MFT mare once. Due to the storms, power and phone loss we did not get the culture info that the mare was thick with the above listed conditions. Please expound on these conditions and relay any potential risks of trasmission and repercussion to our stallion. The mare is starting infusion therapy Monday. Thanks

Answer
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is member of the Gamma Proteobacteria class of Bacteria. It is mostly found in the soil and the water. Infection is spread through direct transmission of the bacteria from mare to stallion or the stallion to the mare during mating. It can also be spread using AI if the stallion is infected. Mares usually show the signs of a discharge from the vagina, though there are some mares who do not show any signs. Stallions, do not display any symptoms at all. You will need to treat both the mare and stallion. Make sure you swab have a # clitoral swab and an endometrial swab swab done on the mare after she has been treated. The stallion should have swabs taken from the urethra, the urethral fossa and the sheath of the penis to make sure that he is clean. You should also treat both the mare and stallion for the strep. In rare cases it can effect a stallions fertility.
