weaning foal from Mare

Question
Once you wean the foal from the mare will it be okay to have the weanling stalled next to the mommy

Answer
Hi Luis,

Yes, it is actually very comforting for both mare and foal to have them stalled next to each other after weaning.  You just need to make sure that there is no way that the foal will still be able to nurse from the mare or you are just kind of defeating the purpose of weaning.

I would also start taking the mare away for a few hours out of the day to get the foal used to mom not being right in his/her sight all the time.  Eventually the foal and mare both will start to accept not being right next to each other for longer periods.

Good luck,
Sandy
