False Heat??

Question
I have a 9 year old mare I bred this past April, In July she showed signs of heat and I saw the stallion mount her again, so I figured that she absorbed or aborted the foal. I have my stallion running with my mares.  In October she show signs of heat again, now I am starting to get a little puzzled. Now it is the end of January and she looks as pregnant as my other mare that was bred two weeks later than her the first time!! I know that I could have a blood test done and I will not do I ultrasound. I'm just letting mother nature take its course. I know that I will have to have my mare checked if she is not bred to make sure she don't have an infection or something else physically going on. I was just wondering your opinion?? Have you ever heard of A mare actually showing heat signs and being bred?? She has had one foal 3 years ago but I didn't own her.  Thank you, Michelle

Answer
Hi- yes I have heard of that! I had a 8 year old arabian who did the same thing-It puzzled me and I had finally given up on getting her bred-lo and behold-she did have a foal, and evidentally took the first time she was bred. If there are any mares around your mare that are coming into heat-she will act like that also- I have had some that when they "take" they will not act like they are coming into heat-EVER-but I have had a few cases like yours. The only was to be sure is to get a vets opinion, but that can be costly- I used to look at old pictures of my horses compared to now-Im pretty sure that if she is bred-there will be a huge difference. Thanks
