Question
i have a 8 year old maiden mare who is nearly 9 months into her pregnancy and wiht winter and no fee around she has lost condtiotion and weight.. i am currently feeding her lucerne chaff with "Breed & Grow" pelltes as awell as molassoses and a "breed performer" grain to help her put on a more condition and weight... she aslo gets 2 biscuits of lucern hay a day. am i doing the right thing to help her put on her weight and condition again?

Answer
This mare is going into her last trimester of pregnancy and it is advised to begin to increase her feed until she is getting twice her normal rations.  The foal does its most growth during this period.  Has this mare been wormed, teeth floated?  Those two things can cause a horse to be thin or a hard keeper.  You might want to try adding 1/4 cup of corn oil on her feed twice a day which will add calories and help her stay warm in cold weather and gain weight.  Horses can gradually be given up to a cup of corn oil a day but increase slowly.  Your feed should be at least 14% protein and the calcium/phosphorus ratio needs to be equal. I hope this has been of help to you.
