Question
Do human preg tests work on horses? My mare filled her udder up about a month ago- and still no foal! How much does it usually cost to get the vet to check her? About how long (in days) is a mares gestation length?

Answer
Hi Katey,
No, a human pregnancy test does not work on a horse. If the horse is 30-120 days then the vet can give her a blood test. You can also get and ultrasound or a palpation done. The price for a palpation varies, depending of the area you live in. The "average" price is $25.00-35.00. A mare's gestation is from 320-340. The average gestation is 340 days. A mare can safely carry a foal for up to 400 days. I hope this helps.
