Our 26 yr old arabian mare caught & now is bred to foal May 5th, the mare is health and active with no signs of slowing down, just wondering for things we should watch for in the older mare and what issues may come up, this mare has had one previous foal when she was 7. Thank you. oh the vet did a pre- breeding inspection and the mare passed.

Hi Tiffany,
If your mare has been having a normal pregnancy then I would not worry. Do you have a foaling kit and have you had experience with foaling? Let me know :-).

Answer
Hi Tiffany,
You will want to make sue that she is not on fescue. Also start giving her either a 14% senior feed or 16% mare and foal grain. You will want to increase the amount of grain she is getting. If you have it then give her free choice grass or Alfalfa hay. This is what I have in my foaling kit.

Tail wrap (gauze or vetrap) to keep dirty tail from introducing bacteria to the vulva and causing infection.
Watch or clock of some kind so you know for sure how long it's taking and when you're in trouble
Baby Fleet enema(s)
Camera and film
OB Lubricant (KY gel or such) in case you need to go in and feel around
Shoulder length OB gloves for the above reason
Banamine for pain after birth
7% iodine for umbilical stump
Blunt end scissors for red bag,
Flashlight or electric lantern just in case, power could go out.
Thermometer
Baling twine to tie placenta at hock level so the mare doesn't step on it before it's fully out
Clean towels
Vet's phone # and phone
Plastic bag or bucket to save placenta so vet can tell if it's whole
Clean bucket to offer mare tepid water afterwards
Mare halter and lead
60 cc syringe with pointy end cut off.  insert plunger into cut end and put smooth end around teat, pull out plunger to milk mare if you need to.
Probios for mare and foal after birth.

Plastic tote to keep it all in and keep it clean, baggies to organize the smaller things and keep them clean.  I put my towels in a garbage bag for protection from dirt.
