how can you tell when a mare is ready to foal

Hi James,
         Here are some of the signs you should look for. A few weeks prior she will start to "V". That means her shape will look like a V. Your mare will start to get restless and rub her butt. Her udder will start to fill and her milk will taste sweet. She may get wax on the end of her teats. Just put a bit on your finger and taste it. Her vulva will become a dark purple/red color. When she is getting ready she may start to pace.
