Team Penning w/ a Pregnant mare

Question
I was thinking of breeding my horse and I do know the research on costs. I was wondering how long can I ride my horse? I heard that people ride their horse until the horse says "no more". I do Team Penning/ cow sorting and was wondering if continuing that activity would be too much of a strain on her? Also, in the beginning stages of pregnancy, can the fetus be absorbed if the mare has too much activity?
Thanks a bunch!!

Answer
Hi Brittany,

If your mare is in good shape and is used to doing the team penning on a regular basis, there should be no problem with continuing to do so once she is determined safe in foal.  Meaning she is past that critical first 90 days.

Most vets will recommend to not introduce anything to a mare's body or over-stressing during the first 90 days and also not to put the mare through strenuous activities after the 9th month of pregnancy.  Light riding is still okay, if they are in good health and are ridden regularly.

I even know a farrier who will not trim a mare's hind hooves after 9 months, due to the twist that it puts on their belly.

Of course everyone has their own opinions on how long to ride a pregnant mare and I've heard people who say "the horse will let you know when she doesn't want anymore", but I have always followed the advice of my vet.. which is no strenuous activities after 9 months.

Hope that helps!
Sandy
