Mare not cycling normally

Question
QUESTION: Hello,  I am trying to breed a 19 yo arabian mare.  Her last foal is a 6yo now.  She is in very good condition, a little fat.

When teased by the stallion, she exhibits much tail swishing, and some stallion like behavior such as striking.  She may whinny and wink at times as well.  I have teased her heavily with the stallion, she urinated heavily, striked, kicked, squealed, and constantly tail swishing.    Her behavior does not align to a three week cycle at all.

Usually mares in season look doe eyed at my stallion, flag their tail to the side, wink and wee submissively.  This mare seems defiant.  She is only new to the property, I have been told that she usually comes into season heavily, wees all down her legs, and is affectionate towards nearby horses.  There have not been any signs of this as yet.  Could the shift to the new property affected her?  Should I put the stallion next to her yard until she cycles properly, or PG her to bring her on?  The weather is very hot at the moment, so she should be cycling normally.  I would like a foal from her as she has some very old and rare lines.

ANSWER: The change in environment can cause it, also a change in people surrounding her and other horses. Additionally, not every stallion catches the eye of every mare. Arabs, in my experience, are sometimes, how can I say, particular, when it come to a breeding stallion. I would give her some time, a few months to get adjusted. She is also an older mare and age may be a contributing factor. Spring is around the corner and the preferred breeding season. If she does not seem to be interested in the stallion, I would consider asking a vet that specializes in breeding to have a look at her and maybe do an ultrasound and blood test to make sure she is sound. Best of luck and let me know how it turns out.

QUESTION: Hello, an update on the mare.  I have placed the stallion next to the mare, with the repeat of the strange behaviour for two days.  She would trot over the the stallion, whinny, wee, whilst swishing her tail.  She would then retreat to the other side of the yard, and stand there swishing her tail.  After this she settled, she seem to realise he was just another horse, and would have the same meals time as her, so forth.  A week later, she cycled normally, with normal interest with no tail swishing.  We have covered her willingly and successfully this afternoon, so I hoping that her pregnancy takes.

Answer
I am so glad it is working out. She just needed some time to get acquainted. Take some time with her and let her know she can trust you during the process. Horses are a lot like people. They need constant positive interactions with people close to them. Let me know how it goes. Best of luck. Brian McElroy http://www.evergreenacresarabians.webs.com/
