Question

enlarged teats
I recently bought a mare that has the largest teats I've seen in my life! A vet told me it was nothing much to worry about and she will be fine. Both teats are the size of my fists! She had some fluid leaking from them, I'm assuming its milk as its whitish in colour and not thick. She had a foal 3 years ago and I suspect he was never weaned properly. He was in the paddock next door but could still poke his head through the fence to get to her. 3 years of nursing is enough to make any mares teats huge. Her udder is normal, just her teats are huge! There is no heat and she isn't bothered when you touch them. I was told that putting her in foal would help because she would no longer have a season but to be prepared to bottle feed the foal if it cant latch on. I was also told that a foal would adjust and learn to feed from her. She is a very well bred mare and with a vets ok, I have put her in foal. She would be 35 days pregnant now and 1 of her teats have reduced in size and the fluid has stopped, Maybe the advice of putting her in foal was right. I have search the Internet and cant find any useful information. I'll send a picture of her teats to show there is no exaggeration on their size.  Have you ever seen this before? Or heard of it? Any advice/information would be appreciated. Thank you so much!

Answer
Hi Belinda,

You're not kidding that they are huge!  Holy cow!

I have seen mares with enlarged teats that you can express white fluid from no matter if she's pregnant or not, but not that large.

My guess is that you are probably correct in the fact that her last foal was able to nurse for way too long which more than likely resulted in mastitis.  Mastitis can result in chronic enlarged teats.  Pretty much like scar tissue.

My worry at this point with this mare would be if she did have  severe mastitis at one time, whether or not her udder will still produce enough milk to satisfy a foal. Mastitis can permanently damage the udder. Also, once her udder fills, the teats are going to get even larger. I would agree with your vet that you should be prepared to bottle feed.

If her udder does produce milk normally and the foal is able to nurse adequately, really watch her teats for any hardness as she could develop mastitis again.

I hope all ends up going well for you and your mare.
