Are foaling complications probable?

Question
Hi,
My parents and I have an Arabian breeding farm, so I understand how normal foaling goes in healthy mares. My question is this...We have a 23 year old Arabian mare that has had trouble getting in foal in the past. As far as I know she has never had any complications, but since she is older I was wondering if it's possible for her to have any problems. She is just weeks away from foaling and I really would like to know if I need to watch her closely or not. Any suggestions you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Christi,

I can understand your concern with whether or not your mare will have foaling complications, but if she is indeed healthy and in good shape, her age shouldn't make much of a difference.

If she has not been kept in good shape, she could have a harder time with pushing because she may get tired more easily than a mare that age that has been kept fit.

It's always a good idea to be on hand for any foaling in case of complications, but you will for sure want to be there with this mare in case you have to assist her by pulling the foal if she runs out of energy to push.

The fact that she has had problems with getting in foal in the past, should in no way affect her ability to deliver normally.

Good luck and happy foaling!
