Is my horse to old to have a foal

Question
Hey my horse is 23 years old. she has had 2 babies but I would like to have another one but I am worried that she is to old. is she to old???

Answer
It is possible to have another baby at 23. I would make sure that if you decide to breed her at this age, a vet be called in to discuss the soundness of the mare and the effects on her life expectancy if she foals. The vet should also have a monthly visit to ensure stability of the mare and embryo. The need for more visits nearer to delivery should be considered. The vital organs like heart, liver, and excess weight should be monitored closely. While she can have a baby, the possibility that she may not survive it is the foremost consideration.  I personally would not do it. Brian
