Question
Hi-
I just bought a 4 month old weanling colt and I was wondering if he will need any sort of foal supplement? Are there any other feeding requirements for a foal?

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer.

Michelle

Answer
Congratulations on your new colt.  He needs to have at least a 16% protein feed during his growing years and regardless of the breed, most horses grow until they are at least three years old.  Depending on where you live, some places lack enough selenium which might be a necessary addition but you should check with the vet before adding any suppliments at all.  Quality hay and or pasture and a good feed as well as regular farrier care, vet care, shots/teeth floating and worming should see your colt grow into a beautiful mount for you to enjoy riding and/or showing for years to come.
