Older mare

Question
Hello, I was just wondering if it would be wise to breed my 24 year old half-Arab maiden mare. She is in excellence health but would she more likely die?

Answer
My first thought is no, it is not a good idea to breed this maiden mare at her age.  A complete reproductive work-up by a qualified reproductive veterinarian would be the first thing to do but, as mares become aged, they begin to lose the ability to produce eggs. safely carry a foal and may have a difficult delivery due to being a first time mother at an advanced age.  If you are considering a foal to raise, I'd look to some of the unwanted rescue foals that are begging for good homes and loving care.
I feel you have owned this mare for a long time and love her enough to want one of "her" foals.  Many people feel as you do and if the vet check proves good and the vet thinks it is a good idea, then by all means find an outstanding stallion so you'll get a great foal.  Again, my first answer would still be no.

Good luck
