Live Cover frequency

Question
Most things I have read recommend breeding every other day?  Why would you not breed every day if the mare is still accepting?

Thanks,
Cindy

Answer
Hi Cindy,

The answer to this question is quite simple.  It is because a fertile stallion's semen will live inside the mare for 48 hours.  There is no need to cover every day.  Covering every day could actually lead to infections and honestly isn't necessary.

If you're breeding to a stallion whose semen count is low, then you could breed every day in an attempt to ensure pregnancy.  Most mares do not ovulate until closer to the end of their heat cycle.  A lot of breeders will not even begin covering the mare until about the the 3rd day of their heat cycle.

Hope that answered your question,
Sandy
