Question
I recently saved a 3yr pintabian from going to the killpens. We know she was pastured w/2 proven studs from August/2009 until January/2010.2 days after putting her in w/my geldings she showed all the signs of being in heat, but only for 1 day.Does this mean she is NOT pregnant. Can a mare in foal be in heat for a day ?

Answer
Hi Denise

August to January is late in the breeding seasons.  Some mares just won't come in late in the season and most remain in anestrus through the winter months.  (the ranches that try to produce foals early in the year....thereby breeding the mares in late fall and early winter use carefully timed lighting to fool the mares into coming into heat when they normally wouldn't) So, she That could have happened or she may have conceived and then absorbed or aborted the fetus.  Then, of course, some mares continue to behave as though they are in heat throughout a pregnancy.  The "showing" doesn't necessarily mean anything.  On the other hand, it may mean she isn't in foal. If you want to know for certain, you need to have her checked by a vet

Good Luck.
