QuestionI was thinking of breeding my Shetland pony to my Friesian stallion by AI. Some people are saying she can't have a foal by that large a horse, but that's like saying midgets can't have regular size children. I read the article and thought you had thought of doing something similar and wanted to know if you did it?, how did it go? was the mare OK? I was always told nature will make the adjustment so she will have a larger foal but not horse size, I just want the Friesian features in a smaller size.
AnswerHi Christine,
I have never bred a pony to a Friesian and have not had the intention to do so.
It is true that it has been said that a mare will not carry a foal that will be too big for her to deliver and pure Friesian foals are actually not that big when they are born.
If you are looking for a pony with the looks of a Friesian, you should look into the Fell Pony. They look identical to a Friesian, but are pony size.
Honestly, when you cross breed Friesians, you will very rarely get the true Friesian look, so the Fell Pony might be just what you're looking for.
