QuestionI have a 5 year mare and long yearling stallion. If I were to keep them together during the winter, what are the chances of the mare getting bred? I live where the winters are very cold. I do not want the mare to get bred but am short on facilities. Any suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks
AnswerHi Jerry,
Actually a mare's cycle will depend on the amount of daylight rather than the coldness of the weather.
Once the daylight hours drop to below 10 hours a day, most mares will stop cycling. You will usually see mares stop cycling approximately in the months of Sept-Oct and then begin again in approximately March.
This is why people who want to breed mares to have foals in January, which is the universal birth date of a horse, will place their mares under lights during the winter months... to keep them coming into heat and having normal cycles.
Hope that helps!
