Question
We have a 2 yr old stud and looking to get a 3-4 yr. old mare to bred with him. But our question is do we have to keep our stud seperate from mare and foal after birth and for how long? We have read alot on mare and baby but can not find information about the stud. Can you help us out here with a bit of information on the best way to handle our pasture and shelter situation etc etc....  Thank you!

Answer
Two yrs. old is not very mature for a colt to be breeding mares but with only one mare, he may not do too much damage to his bones and joints.  That said, it depends on how large of an area the horses are kept, disposition of the mare and stallion is also to be considered.  Personally, I would never keep them together but there are some breeders who have their herd sires always with the mares.  Those horses are on a very large tract of land and the stallion is a mature animal.  The mare will also return to heat about 7 days after foaling.  If she is sore or injured, breeding her would not be healthy for her.  If she is overly protective of her foal, she could permanently damage your stallion.   Good luck
