QuestionI have a 25 year old mare that is in great shape. She has her regular vet check-ups and is healthy. Is she too old to breed? And when do horses stop cycling.
AnswerHi Roger,
While a mare can cycle throughout her 20s. Those cycles usually become irregular. An older mare can have more problems getting pregnant and staying pregnant. If your mare has been consistently bred and has not had any issues with foaling or carrying a foal to term then she should be fine to breed. Make sure that you get a full examination from a reproductive Vet prior to breeding her.
