Question
someone gave me a Mare not sure how long ago she had her baby- She still has milk- she is 4 from what I was told-What can I do to help her get back healthy again? How long do I keep her separated from the other Geldings/mare?

Answer
Hi Tanya,
To dry up her milk, cut out all grain for a week or two. Most mares are dry within 7-10 days. If she is in good shape and had no problems foaling then you can care for her like you would any other horse. If  she does have weight issues, then you may have to have the Vet give her a shot to dry her up. If she does need to gain weight, then feed her a senior feed. This type of feed has all the protein and nutrients that she will need. Also make sure that she has free choice hay or pasture.  I like to keep new horses separated from my old ones for thirty days. This is just to make sure that they do not have anything that can be introduced to your herd. When I am sure that they do not have any illnesses, I introduce them over the fence. If you have a round pen, then put the mare and a non alpha mare in the pen together.  If they get along, then put them out together. This way the new horse already has a herd mate and will be accepted easier.

Please let me know if I did not answer any of your questions.
