Question
We are considering breeding our 13.3 hh mare with a 15.2 stallion.  What is an acceptable, safe difference in size when making breeding decisions?  Is this match safe?

Answer
Hi Maria,

When breeding horses, it is always more important to consider the different breeds you are considering crossing, rather than height difference.

You don't want to breed a heavy boned, large framed stud to a petite mare... that is when you could run into problems with foaling.  The shoulders and rib cage of the foal are the most difficult parts to get past when the mare is delivering.

So, when you're considering breeding your 13.3hh mare to a 15.2hh stallion, you need to look at his bone structure and mass rather than his height.  As for the height differencde on this cross, you should be fine as long as your mare is not extremely narrow hipped and petite.

Good luck,
Sandy
