Mini mare foal or not

Question
I bought a mini mare that allegedly is in foal due any day. The problem I am having is the previous owner knows she was bred with a mini stud paint. They told me she was due "anyday" a month ago, she is very big and lactating, but having no experience with mares let alone minis I don't know what to expect. I have been checking her milk for sickness but it is still very watery. Tried to take a Doppler to check for a foal heartbeat but could only find mare's. Any advice or suggestions on where to try to find heartbeat of foal on mare's body? Or plain old advice on what to do to confirm ?

Answer
Dear Stephanie

"Anyday" is NOT a "due date"!  Call them back and ASK specifically what dates she was bred.  Take a look at the breeding chart at http://www.smallesthorse.com/resources/gestation_chart.htm

If the mare's former owner doesn't recall the date, ask the stallion owner.  For this foal to be registered, the stallion owner needs to submit a form to the registry.  That means the stallion owners keep pretty good breeding date records.

IF with an accurate breeding date to work with and the chart on the website I gave you, she is late enough to be worried about, CALL A VET.

I am a bit confused that you say you "tried to take a Doppler".  Was this a vet or do you have a Doppler in your bathroom cabinet??  Ultrasound is usually the easiest way to go on horses. My best guess is that the former owner didn't calculate due dates correctly and mares can vary wildly, but if you are concerned, get your vet to check her out.

Good luck and send pictures :>)
