i have a new born foal as of yesterday , he got up started eating and got his balance, the mare kept him up walking around he wouls get upset and kick at her he had lots of energy, although today he ate then laid down in the sun i thought he was doing fine acting normal the day before for a new born having had many except that today he's not interested in eating and wants to lay down all day and night weve gotten him up and had him eat but he wont eat much and the side he is laying on when we get him up he falls back to that side when we help him stand, very sluggish and acts as though he was born an hour ago instead of a day old foal. ive ran out of ideas im going to try getting him up every 2 hours threw the night and then using a milk replacer tomorrow and have him nurse off of mom. any ideas ? thank you kendra

Answer
Hi Kendra,
Get your foal to a vet now! If you have not had an IGg test done on the foal, then get one done ASAP. This lets you know if the  foal has FTP (failure of passive transfer). Mares pass their immunities  through their colostrum to the foals in the first 24 hours. On occasion you may have a foal who did not get enough colostrum or the mare may have a poor quality colostrum. The IGg test will show that. With how old the foal is, you would have to give it IV antibiotics. If he is not eating for another reason, then you may have to feed him though a feeding tube. Right now he is most likely dehydrated and has no nutrients. Foals can crash and die very easily. Please get him to a Vet.

Please let me know what happens.
