Mare too old to breed?

Question
Hi,

I have a 24 yr. old Quarter Horse mare that is in excellent shape (she looks 12). She's had six foals with the last one being four yrs. ago. Would you advise against breeding her, or reccomend an exam? Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi Sarah,

As long as the mare is health and had no problems with her last foal, then she is not too old. I know of 28 year old mares who have had healthy foals. I would suggest that you get a basic exam just to make sure that you will have no issues with breeding her especially if you are paying a stud fee.
