Foaling w/other Horses present

Question
I have two 5-year old phillies one of them foaled last night.  I've never had the experience before.  At 3 am when she started, a back leg came out, so I immediately called my brother to ask him what to do.  He said to just stay back and watch.  When he realized that the other horse was with her, he told me to get the other horse away from her, and keep her away for at least 2 or three days, because the other Philly would probably try to rob the colt away from her.  That made sense to me, especially since the horse not foaling was the dominate of the two.  Everything went well, but today I have a real problem.  The two horses have never been apart, and the other horse is EXTREMELY upset by being seperated.  I had a friend tell me that there really wasnt that big a danger of a horse "robbing" anothers foal, especially after the first few hours.  What's your take on this?  Do you think it would be a mistake to put them back together??

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Your two five year olds are now considered mature and you may call them mares rather than fillies.  If you have a place where you could put one mare on one side of a fence and the mare and foal on the other and see how the two react first, that is what I'd do.  If you have no problems and put the two mares together you need to keep in mind that since the other mare is dominant, you may need to separate the two mares during feeding because the mare with the foal should be getting more feed and a higher protein feed as well.  Enjoy the new foal.
