I was wondering should the heat lamp I have stay on all night long as during the day, the people at animal house told me to but doesnt quite make sense to do that so they can enjoy the night life but i know they need heat. So should i leave the heat lamp on even during the night?

Hello Nick,

What kind of heat bulb do you have?

It's best to keep it on about 10-12 hours a day..

Mainly in the day time.

As long your snake haves a hiding place and if the tank is too cold at night it's ok to leave it on all day/night.

During the day the temperature should be around 85-90f and at night at 75f

Does your snake have any other heat resources?

Answer
Do you know how many watts the bulb is?

Since it's a 40 gallon tank I would get a under tank heat mat.

One that's about (4"x5") or (6"x8") these go by gallon sizes but it's not necessary to go by that.

You can find these at Petco, Petsmart, or almost any pet store.

Most likely you'll find the popular brands Zoomed, Cobra, and T-rex.

If you decide to get a heat mat please come back I have a tip for you:)

I'd turn off the light when you leave home and when you get up in the morning turn it off for about 3-5 hours.

And at night for about 2 hours.

Hope this helps for now:)
