Question
This Weekend coming, I hopefully be purchasing one from a local reptile shop. It looks clean, no lumps and it did just finish a shed. The guy at the shop told me the snake is a year old and is an established eater. I was wondering wondering if I got a younger snake, say a couple of months old, would there be a different in eating habits or taming issues. How hard would it be for a younger snake to take to f/t pinkies? I know an one year old milk snake is pretty young, but I'm yerning for something younger so i can feel like I really established the snake. I eventually want get into breeding so tell what is the best way to approach this.

Answer
Hey Doozer

Younger snakes are MUCH easier to switch to f/t than an older snake. Older snakes often are so into the live that they don't know how to change. Even if they have had a few live pinkies to start, as they don't move much most baby snakes won't know the difference between a f/t pinkie and a live one. Ball's are harder to switch, with corns and milks being pretty easy as long as you are patient.

If you are going to eventually be getting into breeding, then a younger snake might be a good learning experience. If the snake at the pet store is a good eater, in good condition, and good with handling to boot, it sounds like a great snake. He is still young, so you will still be doing some of the raising part. This is going to be up to you for the most part. Some of the best breeders do all their own raising from hatchling up so they really know their snake and the snake is comfortable with them. If you get good vibes from the one at the reptile shop, it sounds like a good start.
