My new leo

Question
Hi Tracie,I was in touch with Diane the other expert but I believe the system was messing up and she wasnt getting any of my new questions. Ill bring you up to speed,I lost my leo yesterday,he was only 4,he wasnt doing good for a while but finally it came hes time. So I bought a new baby leo this morning a I have a few questions to make sure Im doing everything right.

1) I have the under the tank heater and the temp reads around 90 degree, but do I also need a basking light also? I do have a UVB bulb,I know they dont need it but I have it there just in case and to also simulate day time.

2) I have the eco terra  medium size cage pictured here : http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4070853&lmdn=Pet+Type

as you can see its not that wide,so with the under the tank heater will that be enough of a temperature gradient for my leo? The heater takes up the half side of the tank and leaving the other half cool.

I just dont know if she really needs a basking light since she has the heater. Thanks for your help

Answer
Hello Taylor,

Well, technically they don't have to have a basking light, no.
What are you using to measure the temperatures with, a stick on type of thermometer?
An undertank heater is very good for heating for geckos, as they need belly heat to digest food.
To simulate daylight you could use a low wattage bulb, say a 20 watt just to help keep the basking or warm area around 88-90.
The tank looks good.  As long as there is a cooler end, that will be fine.  The best way to measure the temperatures are with a digital probe or a temp gun.
The UVB actually is beneficial to them to help with vitamin & calcium absorption.
I am sorry that you lost your other leo.  That is too bad.

Let me know how your new one is doing.
