Color change in Mountain Horned Dragon

Question
QUESTION: I have a young mountain horned dragon (turned 1 on April 12, 2009), and I've raised him since he was only a few days old.  Very recently, I've noticed a very dramatic color change in him: his head and upper body (down to his shoulders) has gone pale, almost to the point of being white.  His horns and spines have also turned this color.

He's never been active, which is true to his species, and he's eating, but he's also starting to lose weight.  He's housed in an ExoTerra glass terrarium with a screen lid, has proper UV bulbs and a heat lamp, and has an earth substrate.  There is also fresh, moving water available to him and he is misted twice daily.

Could these issues be caused by too damp an environment?  There have been no changes recently made to his terrarium or his diet to spark such a change.

ANSWER: Hi Vanessa,
The color you are describing is pre shed.  When was the last time he shed?  Has this only been for the past few days?  If yes, I would give it time and see if it is just simply a pre shed you are seeing.
Also, what brand and type of uvb are you using? There are some out there that are actually dangerous and others that do not give off the needed uvb.

They do need a rather high humidity....(about 70%) Unless you see mold forming, I doubt it would be a too wet of environment, that is of course unless the ground is soaking wet.

QUESTION: Thanks so much for the quick response!

He shed about a month a half ago, and this is far paler than his usual pre-shed change.  He always goes dull, but never white which is why I'm concerned.

His UVB bulbs are Exo Terra RepliGlow; one is a 10.0, the other a 2.0 since the tat is so large and there's some very dense foliage for him to climb around on.

The ground isn't soaking wet, but tends to be very damp.

Answer
Hi Vanessa,
I know that with my iguanas, as they got older, the more pale teh pre shed was...I would give it a few days and see what happens.  If everything else is good, eating, etc..then chances are its just him getting older and skin is thicker and the shed will be thicker. With my iguanas, when they are getting ready to shed, their feet/legs look like melted wax its so thick and white.
