Question
QUESTION: Hi Diane,I went ahead and bought a new leo today,His/her name is Reptar =) I sent you a question last night but I never got the email recipt saying if you got the question or not so forgive me if you have a ton of questions from me. I just have a question for you about my baby leo,

1) I have the under the tank heater and the temp reads around 90 degree, but do I also need a basking light also? I do have a UVB bulb,I know they dont need it but I have it there just in case and to also simulate day time.

2) I have the eco terra  medium size cage pictured here : http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4070853&lmdn=Pet+Type

as you can see its not that wide,so with the under the tank heater will that be enough of a temperature gradient for my leo? The heater takes up the half side of the tank and leaving the other half cool.

I just dont know if she really needs a basking light since she has the heater. Thanks for your help

ANSWER: Hi Taylor,
I did see and answer both your questions..not sure why you haven't rece3ived the answers as I do see them as they were posted. In the one, I suggested that you look at a crested gecko...lol..little late now though!!
On your questions here...
What I use and suggest(of course monitoring temps) is a 18 inch uvb tube to provide uvb and uva for the leo...unless they live in the deep bowels of a cave, they will at some point get sunlight.  many feel( including me) that some uvb/uva is vital for help with their Vitamin D3 and that both uvb/uva are actually a part of a needed "diet".
I also use the undertank heater on 1/3 of the tank and also a heat emitter that provides overhead heat.  The uvb is on for about 10-12 hrs a day and the UTH  is on 24/7 with the heat emitter on a thermostat that is on when needed. remember, only 1/3 of the tank is the warm area(or as close to 1/3 as possible..you don't want the whole cage to be one temperature, but 3 different temperature zones. With the cage being square, your zones may not be able to be as easy to set up, but...when your basking area is at the right temps, most of the rest of the cage will just fall into place. The cool area will never be cooler than the room temperature.
That cage is very nice...with it being high, thats what made me think of possibly a crestie in the cage..lol.
With the heat in the cage, only you can tell that by monitoring the temps both on the floor and the air.  I would use one of the thermometers that have the little probe on the end of a wire..the probe can be placed in the warm hide on the floor and the main unit can monitor the temps either above the hide or in the middle of the cage, in the lower half since leos are not climbers.
With using the uvb tube for daylight, you shouldn't need a basking light....I would invest in one of the heat projectors from ReptileUV  or other sorce.and a thermostat from somewhere like reptilesupply.com. I like the ones from ReptileUV as they heat wonderfully, do not get hot like the ceramic heat emitters and are only 60 watts but put out the heat of what an 80 watt ceramic heat emitter does.

QUESTION: Lol well I have always had a thing for leopard geckos since the 6th grade my science teacher had one and I played with her every day at school,I'm surprised I passed the class cause I always had her and not doing my work. Lol

But anyways I live in florida so my temperatures are always pretty high no matter what. I do have the thermometer with the probe,I have the left part of the cage with the heating pad, with my room fan on high the cage is about 88-90 degrees, and I have a little 15 watt light bulb from target just to simulate day time. But I will turn that off and just activate the uv bulb. Now the post I sent you last night it had the specs of the UVB bulb I had. I can't see if it has UVA also but at pets mart today they had no lights that said UVA on them just UVB,do the UVB lights also emit the UVA and just not say or what?

I just want to clarify because I'm supper paranoid right now especially with the loss of my other Leo,since I do have the heater and have it at the temps that's right I DON'T need a basking light?
The only reason I want to be sure is because if I do have a basking light with the heater the tank temp does raise above the recommend temp, and I do have the heater at the lowest possible setting. I mean my house temp is set at 79 degrees and it never gets below 60 in my house. So yea I just want to make sure. Thanks again for all your help your a life saver.

Answer
Hi Taylor,
When a light produces uvb it also produces UVA... the reverse is not true though... meaning uva bulb does not produce uvb. The uvb tube produces uva also.
If your temps are correct, you don't have to use the basking light...just the undertank heater and the uvb tube during the day and if needed you can add even a regular household lightbulb for more heat or your basking bulb during the day. With all the equipment you have in your room, I'm sure there is plenty of heat!!
Again, you do NOT need the basking light on unless you need extra heat during the day.
