BEARDED DRAGON HEALTH - HELP PLEASE

Question
Hello Heather.
Ok i have just purchased a Bearded Dragon from a friend. I have noticed that when it goes to sleep it turns bright yellow and loses body heat. When its up and about its mid green, active and likes to eat within 5 - 10 mins of waking. It then usually plays about for a while before settling again. It has a curved piece of dry bark tilted up under the lights which it also sleeps under in the shade. So my first question is:

Is it normal for it to turn bright yellow when it sleeps?

It really enjoys grated carrot when it wakes and i feed locust (between 10 and 15 over two days every 7 - 10 days)...my friend was trying to feed it brocolli which i dont think it really liked....so my other question is:

Is it ok to mix a green vegetable in with the grated carrots and if so which green veg would you recommend.

My last question is: how do i cut its nails haha

many thanks to you for having this great service. My dragon seems in good spirits and im sure with your help i can provide with an even better life. Thank you

Answer
Hi Lee, sorry for such a late reply I had to brush up on some research to make sure I got all of my information correct.

You should get him a night light, they come in red, blue, purple, and black colors. Made for reptiles and used at night or all the time. They can produce heat but the color is not registered as light and will not interupt the day/night cycle.

I think his original color is supposed to be yellow and during the day he is stressed, while asleep they can not control their skin color (as when they are stressed they are darker, or duller)

He needs to be fed every day as many crickets as he can eat in a sitting. Remove any non-eaten crickets after 15 minutes of feeding.

You can mix other veggies with the carrots
Collared Greens, Mustard Greens, Dandelion Greens
Squash, Escarole, Green Peppers
fruits like bananas, apples, nectarines, watermelon (fruits are only a treat)

you can mix any fruit/vegetable that is on a "safe list" for him to eat.

this site (under the nutritional link) has a good chart of what are some ok to feed foods and what to feed occasionally, rare, and never

You should consult a vet before cutting his nails.

I beleive the link i gave you also has some nail cutting information in it.

Good luck
