Iguana problem - Broward County, FL

Question
QUESTION: Diane, hi...
I am an animal lover and have no desire to hurt or kill the iguanas invading my backyard.  It looks like an iguana farm, with dozens grazing on the grass, ranging from hatchlings to enormous six footers.  The females have burrowed under my seawall (I live on a canal) undermining its integrity.  I've tried getting rid of them by scattering mothballs and garlic cloves cut in half.  When that failed, I threw four kinds of hot peppers and a giant Costco sized jar of garlic cloves into the food processor and scattered that mixture, but to no avail.  The iguanas seemed to actually like it!  I am at the point of desperation.  The salmonella problem (I can't use my backyard because I fear tracking the feces into the house, putting my cat and humans in danger of disease) and the danger of seawall collapse is driving me to distraction.  There MUST be something to deter these poor creatures.  I've read several online ads claiming to repel iguanas, but doubt their efficacy.  Please help!!  Many thanks.

ANSWER: Hi Susie,
Sorry I don't have an answer for you other than hiring someone to trap them and remove them from your property, which more will only come, I am sure. As you see, there isn't much that deters them.
The reason they are digging into the seawall is most likely where they have buried eggs. If you find the eggs and destroy them, that will eliminate some of them (females can lay 70 eggs) I've not heard of anything that will stop them...even people that have dogs in their yards have found that the igs just ignore the dog. Using bird of prey sounds MAY deter the baby and smaller igs but will most likely have no affect on the larger ones.
I do feel sorry for all the people in Florida that are dealing with the iguanas because I know what they are doing to the natural environment, and home owners there. Much is caused by bad owners releasing their pet iguanas because they don't want them any longer and others are escaped pets..and of course all of those have been breeding over the years, causing a huge population of iguanas.

QUESTION: Hi, Diane...
Many thanks for your quick reply.  You mention that bird of prey SOUNDS might help.  Do you know if anyone's made a CD?  Also, do you think fake birds of prey, such as owls I've seen on top of high rise buildings, or scarcrows, might help send the iguana packing?  Surely there must be a food they hate.  What about scattering lemon quarters around the back yard and sea wall?  I fear that a trapper's fee would be way out of my budget range.  Again, many thanks.
         A distraught Susie

Answer
The sounds MAY help keep the small and younger igs away...as might the fake owls, hawks, etc.  Also, fake large snakes may also help as the snakes do eat iguanas. If there was a sure fire way to deter them, who ever comes up with it will be a very rich person.  The lemons...chances are the igs will just eat those. There really isn't much that an iguana will not eat, especially when they are "in the wild". You may want to talk with a trapper...it may be more affordable than thought.
I did some searching and came up with this as to a CD of sounds:

Also, you may want to do a search on EBAY  for a CD.
The site www.naturesongs.com may also have a cd available.
