Question
My beardie was so incredibly healthy until this morning!....I thought he or she
might be constipated but infact it is something worse I think.  It's rectum is
very pink open and swollen and raw.  What is going on?  I soaked it in warm
water but nothing has changed.  do you have any suggestions?

Answer
Hello Nancy,

Do you have a male or a female?
Could you give me a run down of your tank setup?  I need to know if your dragon is a male or a female.  That would be helpful.
What type of UVB do you have a flourescent tube bulb or a compact or coil light?  What type of basking light do you have?  Is it a bright white light or a colored light?
What do you take the temps with, a digital probe thermometer or a temp gun?
How old is your dragon?
What do you feed your dragon?
Do you supplement calcium?  How often do you supplement calcium?
What type of substrate do you use?
Is anything hanging out of the vent area?  If so, first, get some sugar (1-2 TBSP) & dissolve it in warm water & then add cool water.  The cool water will help with some swelling.
I consider this an emergency though, so if he/she has a prolapse it is best to take him to a vet.
The most common reasons for prolapse are infestations of pinworms or coccidia, low calcium stores, impaction & having to strain, or egg binding.

Let me know how your dragon is doing.
