Question
I have 2 curly tailed lizards and 3 questions.
1: The female often burys herself in the sand and most of the time seems skittish and afraid while the male is fairly lazy and can be handled. Is this just personality or am I doing something wrong?
2: Is there any way to make them more likely to breed?
and
3:Is there anyway I can tell what group of curly tails they belong to?

Answer
1) If you have both animals in the same enclosure, she may be trying to stay away from the male.  Reptiles are territorial and should be kept each in their own enclosure, or the habitat should be very large and spacious, with the male in first, then two or more females added.  Unfortunately a one to one causes intimidation which may be why she's a bit stressed.
2) It's always best to allow the male to cool down a few weeks, allowing him to brumate, then when he wakes to introduce a female on neutral ground. An area which is neither's territory.
3) The easiest way is to either compare yours to pictures online of various varieties, or the best is to inquire about them to a herpetological society near you or to a zoo herpetologist, they would have the opportunity to physically examine your animals.
