Housing uromastyx and bearded dragons together

Question
Hello,
I have a seven month old bearded dragon and want to get a uromastyx. I talked to my breeder and he often houses the two species together, I have observed this and both lizards look healthy and have been thriving during the month I have been observing them. I have a 55 gallon tank and will be able to provide hiding spots for the uromastyx and two different heat lamps over two different basking spots. I will also be able to feed them seperately. However, after talking to another breeding and doing some online research I have found many people who do not recommend housing these two different species together. What is your opinion?
Thanks for your time!

Answer
Hello Rachel,

I have to agree with the research online.  Bearded dragons are very solitary creatures except with us, they are social.  They are territorial & would most likely try to dominate the Uro.
The main objection I have is that their husbandry is different.  The Uros require basking temps of 120-130 while bearded dragons only require 95-110 at the highest.
It is too difficult to maintain the proper basking temps for both reptiles while maintaining the adequate humidity as well.  Uros needs very dry surroundings while bearded dragons need 40-50% humidity.  Uros could get a respiratory infection if they are kept in too humid of enclosure.
It really is best to house different species separate for the most part.  Some will house turtles & frogs, but as keepers we need to do what is best for the animals, not for ourselves.  I try to keep that in mind when I look for simplicity.  It isn't always the best method.
Ultimately, it is your decision, but it is good that you are weighing each option.

I hope this helps.
