Question
QUESTION: Hello. I have a question that would be best if answered soon. I have recently set up a 35 gallon fishtank with 25 gallons of water and 10 gallons of vines and land space. My question is pertaining to anoles.....the green anole to be specific. The tank is set up like a fishtank but, with a floating turtle platform as well as vines and a live plant floating on top of the water....the vine is suspended so it is not in the water. I have a green anole, a firebelly toad, and 4 fish in the tank. Everyone gets along fine but, my anole hasnt eaten since i got it a week ago.....ive had anoles before that were very healthy and active......although they were in an all land set up. could the high humidity or something simmilar be causing this problem......the anole seems ok...it hangs out near the heat light all day and the temp is about 80-85 during the day.....the anole is usual green and otherwise seems healthy....other than being skinny cuz she hasnt eaten....any advice on how to help her would be appreciated.....

Bob

ANSWER: OK, well it sounds like the parameters are OK but there maybe a competition for food as the Anole and the Fire Belly would eat the same size prey.  Also depending on how large the platform is there may not be enough room for the Anole to be on land comfortably especially if the Fire Belly is on it.  Be aware as well, Fire Belly toads can be toxic to their reptile counterparts when housed together and it is usually recommended to keep them separate for other reptiles.  A week without eating after coming to a new home is not unusual in reptiles however so I wouldn't worry so much about that as I would try adding some more land area that the Anole could access and also provide a hide for the Anole if they cannot escape to a hide they feel stressed.  I believe these factors would help but if I can be of any further assistance please email again and we can try to work this out.

QUESTION: I really appreciate you replying to my question so quickly. I completely understand what you are saying and was starting ti think it myself. The reason I am writing again is to ask your opinion on an idea i had for a solution. I was thinking about getting another turtle platform and rigging it so it would be suspended out of the water. The toad doesn't usualy go on the vines that i have in the tank so he would be unlikely to reach it. That would also keep the platform more dry. Then I would purchase a log for the anole to go into. (if you have any comments or suggestions on this idea, i would really appreciate that.)
I also wanted to comment that the anole wasn't eating Before the toad was in the tank. I was wondering if that could mean anything? Because at that time, there was no other animal taking up the anoles land space, or taking his food. I also dont worry about the toad taking the anoles food, but only because when i fed the toad I placed the waxworm on the platform where the toad was, and when I fed the anole I placed the waxworm on the vine. n I also watch afterwords to see if they eat it or not. ( I was just letting you know because you said that the toad could be taking the anoles food, I wasnt disagreeing because that would be a concern if i didnt do what i just described. )
My next question is about the toad being toxic? I knew some toads were but i didnt think firebelly. The only reason im asking is because Ive heard of anoles being kept together with firebellys fine. This is news to me so I was wondering if you could tell me how it is transmitted and what it can do to my anole.

         thanks for your time,

Answer
Hey Bob, I totally understand your story and I appreciate you asking.  Cork Bark Logs are a great limb for anoles to use.  Good job watching the animals eat most people wouldn't do that.  So then I would guess the anole is still adjusting to the new environment and I would simply keep an eye on it. If it continues not eating for another few days I would be concerned I would also try feeding it some other types of foods like crickets maybe as it may not know what a wax worm is or just be a picky eater.  All the temps etc seem fine so I am perplexed as to why he wouldn't eat.
Now then, as far as keeping different species together yes you can do it however, if the anole gets aggressive and tries to bit the Firebelly this is where the toxin comes into effect.  I am not totally sure on what the toxin is exactly but I know they are somewhat toxic when they are consumed by other animals.
Another platform sounds great and I would place the log going to the platform.  Hope this helps and please keep me informed as far as what becomes of this as I would love to know.  I don't think the anole will ever try and eat the toad but they are all wild animals so we can never predict what they may do.
