Question
what kind of heating and lighting systems should i use to heat a 18x18x24 terrarium for my whites tree frog because I've researched around and i can't find much info on this topic.

Answer
Hi Mike,

White's tree frogs (like most frogs) have quite simple heating and lighting requirements. They should have access to a daytime temperature that reaches the mid 80's F. They do not need any special lighting spectrum (ultraviolet) but do benefit from from having a normal day and night photo-period. For this reason I like to heat and light my frog tanks with a small wattage regular incandescent (household) bulb placed on one end of the tank. I use timers with 12 hours on and 12 hours off. If the ambient room light is sufficient to provide the photo-period then even a small reptile heat pad can be used to provide heat. A fluorescent canopy can enhance the visual affect of a well planted "display" tank and will benefit the growth of live plants but is not needed for your frog.
There will be some drying effect from any heat source but don't stress about that too much with White's. White's have thicker skin then many other species and are less prone to evaporation. As long as they have access to water they easily tolerate and inhabit moderately dry conditions. This leaves them much less prone to bacterial and fungal infections that often plague captive frogs.
The ambient room temperature will dictate what wattage bulb you require but with your size tank I would suspect that a 60 watt household type bulb may be sufficient.
