QuestionMy teenage daughter brought home a 4-5 mos old green iguana 2 weeks ago. Iguana was doing fine until 2 days ago. Eyes started to get matted shut and is refusing to eat. We live in rural area, vets do not do iguanas, closest reptile vet is 3 hrs away. No changes in diet, climate or activity since we got it. Cute little guy but no idea how to help? We have mixed a saline solution for eyes, it worked for a hour. Now eyes are shut again like it is blind. Bathe it and defecated once in 2 days. I don't want anything to happen and don't know how to help?
Answer If it was originally an irritation, it may be infected and really needs a veterinarian's definitive expertise. I know reptile vets are rarer than dog and cat and in a few states there are none at all. My own vet is a half hour away, so I count myself lucky. But I have iguana owning friends who have traveled 100+ miles to get their animals to proper medical care. Once you have seen this vet once, and explained the situation, many will help with advice by phone, even e-mail, but the initial visit is important. For the sake of this cute little guy, please consider making the trip.
