QuestionSadly I picked up my large copper water can and inside was what I have now identified as a Western Fence Lizard mom (alive) and baby (dead). I am assuming they ran in for shelter, got stuck, and over heated since the past couple days have been hot. The baby was still soft so had not been dead long.
I am perplexed how to best save the mom. She is easily letting me hold her. I have fed her water from my fingernail and she opens her mouth a little & appears to drink. We tried to feed her ants & she won't eat them (not sure if this is her regular diet?) I don't know if she just needs water, or what she needs. She is perking up a little since I first found her a couple hours ago (assuming the water helped.) I don't know if I should turn her loose over by my pond, or if she is too weak to survive at this point. Also, I have her in a pie tin with a pool of water on the side. She seems to prefer to be held, not sure if the tin is too cool.
Any suggestions are appreciated. I am not interested in keeping her as a pet, she has been around my house for a while now. But, I don't want her to die. Thanks.
Answer If she survived the night, I would suggest you find an area near your pond that has rocks for basking and for shelter from the heat. If her kidneys were not badly damaged she will recover.
I would also suggest the water can be moved or filled to protect other wildlife.
Not eating is a sign of stress, so is allowing herself to be handled. Putting her back in habitat she is used to is the best way to help her.
