Question
I have a single male guniea pig, named Spike, and am wanting to get him a companion and since I have had problems with pet stores, and breeders, sexing my pets wrong before(this is how I ended up with 15 gerbils, and a male rabbit with PMS).I was wondering if you could spay and or neuter guniea pigs.  Spike needs a companion yet I would not know what to do with 24 babies a year, other than seperate the parents which would seem to be hard on Spike, he's very social always talking to the gerbils, the dog, and me.

Thanks

Answer
If you are worried about pet stores and breeders, I urge you to go adopt a cavy from a shelter or rescue. Check with your local dog/cat shelters as they often get in small animals.

By the way, your "male rabbit with PMS" was he neutered? Rabbits need to be neutered as it helps calm them down and prevent many different cancers, however, this is not true with cavies.

It is very rare for one pair of cavies to have 24 babies a year, and if they even had one litter together, I would hope you would know to separate them by sex.
