Getting a companion for my guinea pig

Question
Hi Jules,

I have a 6 month old male guinea pig who has not been neutered. When I got him he was very timid, and although he has improved a lot with handling etc. he is still rather shy. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to get a companion for him, and if so would it be better to get a male or neutered female (I don't want any guinea pig babies)?

I was advised recently that it would be better to get him neutered before introducing another guinea pig in order to minimalise aggression, is this correct?

Thanks in advance,

Jess

Answer
Jess,

Sorry for just now getting back to you with a reply, I've been sick the last couple of days.

Getting him a companion is a good idea as Guinea Pigs are group animals in the wild so to have more then one is always is good idea for you and him. It'll make him happier and a little less on the shy side.

Male or neutered female will make a great companion for him, as long as either one has a personality that matches or comes close to his own. That way they will get along no matter what. Also it helps to have the companion be a month to 2 months younger then your guy. It really doesn't matter if it is another male or altered female. It is up and what you think might be better for your guy. But I would say as he is a little on the shy side your better bet would be an altered female.

Neutering does little (next to nothing) to change the behavior of aggressive guinea pigs, unlike the effect it has on other types of animals. Likewise, neutering does little to curb mounting or sexual behavior. It will prevent unwanted pregnancies. There is no need or reason to neuter two boars living together. If they don't get along now, neutering won't help.

I hope this helps,

      Jules
